HOLISTICA AROMATHERAPY EXPLANATION

Use of therapeutic essential oils and aromatherapy is greatly misunderstood. Some feel it is merely cosmetic; a nice smell that relaxes because it smells so good. Some practitioners don’t even know which oils to use when, or even where their oils have come from. Let me clear up the misunderstandings and myth…

There are over 300 essential oils favored in use currently. Many of these are the active ingredient in drugs prescribed by the orthodox Western system of medicine, or the inspiration for chemical copies. They are appreciated for their cell-rejuvenating and beautifying properties. Some are anti-inflammatory for rheumatism or arthritis; or for relief in the digestive system. Their uses vary from aftershave to headache relief, menstrual problems, to heart or neurological conditions. Many athletes use essential oils for muscle spasms, aches and injuries, after they get over the pretty scent! Realistically there are some pretty macho scents made by nature… like cedarwood or pine.

The use of essential oils has been around for tens of thousands of years. Today aromatherapy is the science that employs the balancing and beautifying properties of pure herbal and floral essences to enhance the condition of the skin, body, hair, mind and the environment. For centuries aromatherapy has been a part of Ayurvedic medicine, an Indian system that focuses on restoring balance within the body, promoting a healthful state of being. In Egypt, infused flower oils were used by priests and priestesses for medicinal purposes, to embalm the dead, and to rejuvenate and soften the skin and hair. Herbs were also infused in vinegar and drunk to maintain and improve health.

Many Roman and French leaders used essential oils in battle. In ancient Rome the essential oils were burned on street corners to incite action in times of war or to calm. Rose petals and oils would celebrate the arrival of certain leaders. The ancient Chinese used acupuncture with aromatherapy. A French chemist discovered the curative powers of Lavender when he burned himself in the lab. He coined the term aromatherapy. Today essential oils are used by holistic healthcare practitioners and massage therapists for many reasons. In Asian and European countries they use essential oils today for medicinal purposes just as they did in ancient times. Although the spa and cosmetic industry has discovered the benefits of aromatherapy and include essential oils in their products, Western society is slowly coming around to their medicinal uses as well.

Essential oils supply oxygen and nutrition to the cells, aiding in toxin release, growth and healing. Most essential oils have fungicidal, bactericidal and antimicrobial properties among others. They are great for detoxification, for pain release, and for healing. There are no negative side effects if issued by a certified aromatherapist skilled in oil blending.
